Collaborative Regional Alliance for Farmer Training Farm description: Wicklow Way is a certified organic farm situated on the Waterfront Trail on the shores of Lake Ontario, east of Grafton in Northumberland. We are a 40-acre property, most of which is early stage forest with groomed trails meandering among seasonal streams with benches to meditate, read and write. Our farm business is a 3-acre market garden of heirloom vegetables specializing in tomatoes. We also raise Muscovy ducks for meat and eggs as well as laying hens and meat chickens. For 2010 we are considering introducing dairy goats to our lives for making cheese, yogurt and, of course, for their milk to drink. We are looking for two interns who are serious about small scale farming for the 2010 season, starting April 1st until the end of September. We offer room and board with a stipend and a 5-½ day workweek. You will learn about seed starting, green manures, greenhouse and hoop house options, planning your crop rotation, tractors, ploughing and discing, rototilling, tool sharpening and maintenance. As well, Gregory works with wood and there is always something that needs building and/or repairing on a farm. We will be building a chicken ‘palace’ for our meat birds as well as housing for our goats. We attend two farmers markets in Toronto, we have a farm gate stand affectionately known as The Mall, and we wholesale to produce markets and restaurants. We plan to build an outdoor wood-fired oven in 2010 for production of breads to augment our sales at The Mall. Our meals are a collaborative effort. There is a 120'x120' pond near the front of the property. There is a very large barn on the property, that needs repair - it is currently only used for storage. The land has lain fallow - not been farmed or used in any fashion - for at least 30 years. My wife and I and our children live in the house on the property. The house renovations are to the point that we could probably fit one more person into the house, but that person would have to able to deal with 2 young noisy children waking them up at 5:30 and a big friendly dog, and get along with my wife and I. Alternatively, we could put up a small building <= 108 sq.ft. (216 sq.ft. with a loft) in size for housing, for someone that believes in minimalist living arrangements. (This size does not require a building permit; anything bigger does require a building permit.) We'd like to set up a forest garden, and in 2011 my wife started researching what was involved, but we didn't have time to 'do it right', so I just planted 40+ fruit trees in the form of a traditional orchard, and 100+ berry bushes in the form traditional berry patches. Single-cut Organic red Clover in the re-gained 44 acres - this section continues its transition to organic as of now, and will qualify for Organic Certification in July, 2011. By expanding windbreaks, through the planting of native pollinator wildflowers, grasses, shrubs, etc, this 44 acre portion will be cut down to 3 - 10 acre sections from which Drumlin Farm will start a crop rotation, one of which will always have Edamame. The rotation will include crops that can tolerate drier soils (rocky, sandy loam), such as potatoes, tomatoes, corn, soy bean and more, with the third year being a nitrogen-fixing crop. We will be selling via farm gate sales again next year with the vision that a permanent building is in the very near future. So here I find myself with a farm, a growing passion to farm it (though I am a gardener, I am no farmer... yet!), but work obligation is taking me away. I will not be able to personally farm the property this coming season, hence why I have this posting. For the short-term period, I am looking for someone to farm the property as it is - as a market garden (vegetables and herbs) while maintaining/practicing the historical use of the land in its current manifestation. I hope this person/people can market the produce under the existing farm name and further its goodwill as it exists within the community (and free to expand as they see fit). There are other outbuildings on the farm that you can use for other purposes (for example, there is a straw bale chicken coup which you can raise chickens/eggs). For the long-term period, I am open to an ongoing relationship with this special person/people if we feel like the business-farm venture is working for both sides. My personal vision of where I would like to take the farm is to specialize in five main areas: certified organic maple syrup production, certified organic heirloom garlic, sunflowers and sunflower oil, mushrooms and culinary and medicinal herbs (along with other value-added products from the farm). Even if I specialize in certain produce/products, I still plan to maintain a variety of veg for myself and family and friends but I am also open to an expansion of the garden and an eventual CSA if and when that opportunity may arise. Maybe some goats at some point too! There is housing (a gorgeous little thing!) available but you will be sharing this with me as I expect to be home on most weekends (to relax and to help!). We have decided, however, to scale back this year and discontinue the production of our herbal teas and culinary blends, and just concentrate on our body products. However, we are considering maintaining our organic certification for the farming of the herbs required for the body products. This will require a very small portion of the 3.5 acres that are certified organic. As such, we do not have enough work to occupy an intern fulltime. However, if somebody is willing to work on their own and farm the certified organic land to grow their own produce (to sell, to eat, to process), we would be willing to mentor that person in the requirements of certified organic growing and ensure that all requirements are being met. We have a 100 acre farm. The remaining acreage is regenerating pasture land that we use for walking, running and cross-country skiing. We grow produce for our own use and have some chickens and goats, as well as an unheated greenhouse which could be used by the person in question. We are members of the Quinte Organic Farmers’ Co-op and By the Bushel, both of which could be a source of sales to the potential farmer. We have renovated a portion of the cheese factory that is on our farm, which is where the person in question would stay. With 75 acres of organic fields and possible hydro, solar, and wind power generation sufficient to provide for the whole community, the potential for self sufficiency is quite achievable. Members of this community will enjoy not only a very healthy and inspiring environment but food and energy security as well. THE RIGHT COMMUNITY Called EARTHWORKS Eco Village this community is being designed using sustainable development principles to be an example of optimized ecologically based community living. The site plan applies permaculture principles to provide community recourses that work with and are inspired by our natural support systems. Edible forest gardens, and smaller scale annual and perennial combo gardens, herb gardens and eco orchards around the eco homes we will be building. Larger scale sustainable cropping systems in the fields are also being planned to meet all the community’s food requirements, and more. Our goals includes meeting the human needs of our membership, so we are incorporating not only food and energy security but resources for education, eco business, and recreation into our site plan. THE RIGHT SHELTERS Earthworks will be utilizing a wide variety of green building technologies and techniques to insure energy efficient and healthy environments to live in. Eco Shelters (Earthships) are being designed to be completely self heating and self cooling, and to survive earthquakes, hurricanes and floods. Interior green houses for food production and cold rooms for food storage are being incorporated into the structures. HEALTHY FOOD SECURITY One of our objectives is to establish food security for the community. We have designed in the capacity to feed many people with the land available to this project. Most of the 75 acres of the project is rich organic sandy loam fields with mature tree lined wind breaks. We will be developing several demonstration cropping methods supporting a very wide variety of crops. We have set aside several areas on the site for organic food production. 1. Our initial site plan sets aside 31 acres of south sloping crop land (providing a longer growing season) that will be dedicated to ecological farming projects 2. We also have 5.7 acres of reclamation land (bed of old gravel pit) for our soil rehabilitation and edible forest projects. This land will produce a wide variety of crops from fruit and nuts to berries and herbs. 3. We also have Two natural ponds for aquaculture projects one deep pond eco system for species like trout and one shallower pond eco system for bass. There will also be Tilapia tanks designed into the solariums of the Earthships. 4. We also have 5.8 acres of agricultural fenced fields for raising organically fed animals with a plan to raise a variety of heritage breeds. 5. Adjacent to the residential buildings we will be creating ecological landscapes incorporating edible perennial gardens. 6. For winter fresh food production we have designed a solar heated greenhouse as well as several solar heated solarium's attached to the earthships and all residences. 7 Plots will be set aside for heritage seed production and we will be creating a seed bank for heritage varieties. 8. We have allocated land for the Earthworks CSA. This is our community shared agriculture project where members can prepay for a share in the production from our CSA organic gardens. Good Food Boxes are provided to Earthworks CSA members at regular intervals. RENEWABLE ENERGY SECURITY One of our other objectives was to provide our community with energy security as well. We have the good fortune to have an ideal site for the development of several renewable energy systems within the community. We have excellent wind sites and optimum solar exposures at several locations on the property as well the potential for 24/7 hydro generations on site as well. HOLISTIC EDUCATION A primary goal is to provide educational opportunities for sustainable living. Featuring programs for children and adults, we are developing a whole series of courses and workshops for Earthwalks Sustainable Living Institute including a planned degree program through Gaia University. Classroom space is being built into our facility designs to accommodate our educational programs, which will be incorporating the latest techniques of accelerated learning through a holistic nature based education. Earthworks Sustainable Living Institute will be offering courses and workshops on a wide variety of environmentally responsible and healthy living subjects. Only Earthworks Enterprise Members can apply to have a business idea incubated by the Earthworks Eco Business Centre. However all members can volunteer, intern or be employed by the Eco Enterprises based within our community. At this point we already know that Earthworks will be involved in incubating several business activities from green building design and build services, eco landscaping, permaculture design, organic food production, heritage seeds and nursery, organic bee keeping, passive solar heated green houses, passive solar heating and cooling systems, healthy home design and decorating, eco products, natural health products and services, eco education, community shared agriculture (CSA) and currency systems. The profits from our Eco Business Center are reinvested in our community and in our Members. EARTHWORKS WORK EXCHANGE Earthworks Work Exchange - Within the community we will be creating an Earthworks Work Exchange where community members can earn Earthworks Dollars by working on community projects. Members labour on Earthworks projects will be in turn credited in Earthworks Dollars to the members Work Exchange account. Those credits can be spend on a wide variety of goods and services within the Earthworks Community. Though we will also be participating in an international barter exchange network, most of our energy and time will be dedicated to creating a healthy local economy that can provide our community members with positive and sustainable employment and business opportunities. EARTHWORKS ECO FESTIVAL The Earthworks Festival will be an annual celebration of sustainable living ideas products and services held at the Earthworks Eco Village. It will provide sources for a broad spectrum of new and useful resources to our community members and an opportunity for our Enterprise Members to exhibit their goods and services to potential customers from both local and not so local markets. THE EARTH WE WALK ON We have been looking for the right land for this project for several years and we did find several properties that held promise. However, this year we feel we found the perfect site on which to create Earthworks. This property is a spectacular piece a gently rolling organic fields. The topography slopes gently south down to form a valley which features both a river and ponds. (See the linked Site Plan). Below the river and south of the property, there is a vast area of crown land untouched by roads, and teaming with wildlife. The crown land is a mostly a mixed forest providing rich biodiversity with many small lakes ideal for swimming in the warm season. The land itself provides a perfect canvas on which to create our community. We\\\'re in the process of certifying organically and should be certified in the U.S by the Fall and in Canada by next year. As every day passes on the farm we’re gaining firsthand experience of organic and other ecologically-sound growing methods and sustainable living practices. We are passionate in supporting the organic movement, which is labour intensive and does not rely on chemicals, artificial fertilizers, herbicides or pesticides. We do this for the sake and benefit for ourselves, our children and for every other being that resides on this planet. Our main crop is Ukrainian Organic Garlic that’s the Hardneck variety which Alana’s family has been planting for over 50 years. Last Spring we planted 3 varieties of nut trees and this summer we’ll be planting about 80 apple and pear trees. There are currently 10 beehives on the property which are maintained by Mark’s Uncle Peter who has been a beekeeper for a donkey’s age (but don\\\'t tell him that!) and has hives across Ontario. The farmland is pure and beautiful with rolling hills, its own pond, frontage on Bass Lake, a 35 acre forest and 15 acres of provincially significant wetland. Some of our future farm goals are to get “off the grid”, either through wind and solar power or both, and to provide heat through Geothermal methods and wood burning furnaces. We’re also dabbling in Biodynamic Agriculture; a philosophy that’s based upon a healthy farm; an “ideal farm” that uses variety of sustainable farming techniques including crop rotation, composting, seed saving, interplanting, and careful treatment of livestock to ensure both longevity and quality. Influences from the moon and other planets are also important components of starting, planting and harvesting your crops. A farm that has the right balance of plants and animals can then produce everything it needs from within itself. Last summer was our first time EVER cutting and baling hay. We succeeded in baling just over 400 square bales with minimal cuts and bruises and one small fire.
